What's the difference between the Tecarta NIV Addon and the NIV Bible App?

The Addon will not create a separate App in your program group. It merely downloads the bible data into your library. The Bible App is a bible reader plus the bible data. If you already have a bible reader and want to have more translations, we recommend buying the Addon since it does not clutter your device with too many app icons.

To buy an Addon:

  1. Start the Market App.
  2. Search for 'tecarta'.
  3. Buy products with 'Addon' as part of the product name.

Bought an Addon. Where is the Addon on my device?

Addons do not exist as separate applications. The bible data is added to your existing library and is accessed through your current Tecarta Bible App.

To locate your new add-on:

  1. Start your Tecarta Bible app.
  2. Press the Menu soft key.
  3. Select Library.
  4. Select the Local Bibles tab.

It says that it can not load local bibles

The SD Card may be unmounted. Local Bibles are stored on the SD Card.

To check the SD Card:

  1. Press the Home soft key.
  2. Press the Menu soft key.
  3. Touch Settings.
  4. Select SD Card and Phone Storage.
  5. Check if the SD Card is mounted and has available memory. If it is not, select Mount SD Card.
  6. Try the Bible App now.

Getting a Force Close as soon as I try to Start the App

Make sure you have the latest updates. The most current one is v3.0.4. See "How to Update Your App" below if you need help updating.

Make sure your SD Card is mounted (see above).

Also, on some devices, force close occurs when the Text-to-Speech data is not installed. Please see topic "Where do I get the Text-to-Speech Data?" below, if you need instructions on how to do this.

If this problem continues, please email the following files from the Tecarta folder on your SD Card to androidsupport@tecarta.com:

  • userdata.sqlite
  • all files starting with "bak"

Highlights and selection are not working

The new update is up (v3.0.4). Install it.

  1. Start the Android Market App.
  2. Press Menu.
  3. Select My Apps to see a list of apps you've downloaded or purchased.
  4. Update the Tecarta Bible App.
  5. Start the App. It will analyze whether you need any bible data updates for the next restart.
  6. Exit the app by pressing the back key.
  7. Start the App again. It will prompt you to update your bible data if necessary.

Select issues should be solved.

Need to Reinstall the app. Can I do it without being charged again?

Yes, Google Checkout will remember your previous purchase and allow you to download without further charges. Just be sure to use the same Google account as you used when you made the purchase.

How do I backup my Notes, Highlights, and other data?

If you already received the Tecarta Bible Version 3.0.x update, sign up for a tecartabible.com account and synchronize. Also, on the SD Card, your notes, etc. will be in a file called userdata.sqlite under the Tecarta subdirectory. Just copy that file to backup your data. That file will persist even through uninstalls and reinstalls until you manually delete it.

How do I make it talk?

First of all, check your media volume. It may be that the READ function is working but your volume is too low to hear it.

To read selected verses:

  1. Start the app.
  2. Select some verses by touching them.
  3. Touch the plus symbol on the toolbar.
  4. Touch Read.

To read a whole chapter:

  1. Start the app.
  2. Press the Menu soft key.
  3. Touch Read.

Where do I get the Text-to-Speech data?

The Read function uses the Text-to-Speech (TTS) capabilities of your device. It requires that the Text-to-Speech Data files to be installed.

To check if TTS is installed:

  1. Press the Home key.
  2. Press the Menu key.
  3. Touch Settings.
  4. Select Voice Input and Output.
  5. Select Text-to-Speech Settings.
  6. If the data is not installed, install the data.

From here you can also change the preferred Speech Engine and other speech settings. Just be sure to check the 'Always use my settings' box after selecting your new preferences.

You can also download or buy third party text-to-speech voice data from the Android Market to change the voice.

Why is the App running in the background? Isn't this wasting resources?

Use the back key to tell the Bible App to finish. If you press the home key, it places the app in the background. However, even if you exit the app, the app may still stay in the background. Why?

The short answer is this is how all Android Apps work. The Android OS actually controls the life cycle of all applications. Here is a link to a video that explains Android's memory management. So don't worry if our app is still in the background, that's normal for all apps.
